At Ian Hart Funerals, we’re committed to making our funeral prices…Our Funeral Costs
Unless we’ve been through it before, and probably relatively recently, few of us will know what to do when someone dies. Naturally, it can all be quite overwhelming, and there’s no handy bereavement checklist to refer to, so any guidance and advice as you go about it will be helpful. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that the services you come across managing the situation will all be accustomed to helping in a sympathetic way and with practical advice, so don’t be afraid to ask for assistance at any point.
For a death at home, you should first contact the deceased’s doctor, who will confirm the death and issue a Medical Cause of Death certificate, which will allow you to register the death. If the death happened in hospital, a hospice or a care home, they will organise this aspect for you. From here you can contact us on our 24-hour service and we can start with the funeral arrangements.
If the death was unexpected or the doctor is unable to determine the cause of death, the deceased may need to be taken into care by the Coroner for a post-mortem. If an inquest is required, you won’t normally have to wait for it to arrange a funeral.
You should be registering the death within five days of it happening and ideally in the district in which it happened. This will be by appointment only at the local Registrar’s office. If you are unable to attend in person, you can do this at your nearest office by declaration. In either case, you’ll need to take the Medical Cause of Death certificate and some identification for yourself. (More often than not, the doctor’s surgery or hospital will send the Medical Cause of Death certificate direct to the registrars for you). If possible you should also take the deceased’s birth certificate, NHS card and marriage certificate (if applicable).
Once you get in touch with your chosen undertaker, they will be able to advise on how to arrange a funeral and help with all the required details. Here at Ian Hart Funerals, we’re happy to welcome you into our office to discuss the arrangements, or we can visit you at your home – whichever is more convenient or comfortable for you.
Among the things we’ll need to discuss with you are: a suitable date and location, the coffin or casket, flowers and/or donations and general details about the type of funeral service you would like. Don’t worry if you can’t provide all the answers from the outset, there will be time to fine tune the details. We’ll also make sure we provide as precise a quotation for our services as possible so that you know what can be managed with your budget.
Ian Hart Funerals has been a leading local undertaker in and around Worthing, Shoreham and Littlehampton for many years. During that time we’ve helped hundreds – if not thousands – of families with their funerals and we’re proud of our reputation as reliable and affordable local funeral directors.

Arranging a Funeral
Our professional and caring staff are dedicated to working with your family to provide assistance in selecting high quality and affordable funeral services.
We were very pleased with the calm, compassionate, professional service we received from Sam, Jane and the team at Ian Hart for a recent funeral I had to arrange. They were always on hand to help with any questions. It took a large weight off our minds as we were confident they knew exactly what they were doing at all times and everything was under control. Their experience really showed, many thanks.

Our Family were assisted though this particularly difficult time, with the sad loss of our Mum, and would like to thank, in particular, Chris Cook for his caring and professional attitude in the specific arrangements; and Andy Roberts who led our Mother’s beautiful service with calm, caring and compassion. In this very difficult time the service helped turn our loss into a positive reflection on life ahead, with treasured memories. THANK YOU
- Warren Stembridge
I would like to thank Ian, Sam and the staff for the professional service. An incredibly difficult time made as seemless and easy as possible. All staff were compassionate, understanding and nothing was too much trouble. I had forgotten something on the day of the funeral but Ian addressed this for us which meant so much and more than I could expect. Thank you again to you all, everything just as my mum would of wanted

Ian Hart helped make the terribly sad experience of losing our mum incredibly smooth and easy to arrange her service. It was a very devastating time for us and challenging with the COVID situation. I have to say that I would recommend going direct to Ian Hart rather than using other types of funeral plan packages. They really know their profession and provide excellent value for money as well as a very caring and respectful attitude.
- Emma Walder
We organised my Dad’s funeral through Ian Hart and held it at their Gordon Chapel in Worthing and it went so well, very personal with the staff being attentive and caring. Although an upsetting and emotional event to arrange the process from beginning to end went smoothly, being professionally run with a lot of care and advice. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone at Ian Hart’s, especially Sam.
- Jane Ansell
I was so impressed with the quality of care and dignity given by Ian Hart and his team at the funeral of a very loved friend. The decision on whom to employ for my husbands funeral in June this year was not difficult, and I was not disappointed. It was the worst day of my life but equally, one of the best as I felt that I had organised the best tribute possible for my husband.
- Elizabeth Allamby
My family and I would like to thank Jane James and all her colleagues at Ian Hart Funeral Services, Worthing for the service they held for our mother in the Gordon Chapel on 30th November 2020. Without doubt it was exceptional.
Their showed patience, flexibility, professionalism and sensitivity to all our requests, and nothing was ever too much trouble. My mother would have been delighted and we, as a family thank and highly recommend them.

My mother-in-law had a funeral plan arranged through Ian Hart. From the out-set, they were professional, compassionate and everything went seamlessly. The Celebrant, Debbie Martin was lovely and the service in the Gordon Chapel was perfect. In difficult circumstances, coping with a close family bereavement and also the impact of the COVID-19 restrictions, Ian Hart Funeral Services were first class.

Thank you Ian Hart and all your Staff for a very professional and caring funeral for my Mother yesterday. Everything went smoothly, and all who attended said how good it was. The photo show combined with the music was a particularly good feature and special thanks to Chris for his patience and understanding in compiling it. As usual Pastor Joe Davis conducted a very warm and perceptive service.
Thanks also to the caterers who provided a lovely selection of food , nothing was too much trouble for them and their pleasant demeanor added to an enjoyable afternoon following the service even providing bags for the leftovers!
All in all a very good experience, in good surroundings, carried by a professional carring team.

Can’t thank Ian Hart and his team enough for giving my mum Doreen Ottaway the best send off she deserved. Very professional and caring. They did her proud in this covid environment. Went the extra mile. All I can say is thank you.

Absolutely fantastic funeral services.
Everyone involved provided the best possible service they could have for my fathers funeral.
Sam Hart directed the funeral on the day and did a fantastic job.
Chris and Dan had the hard job of collecting my father the night he passed and were professional and sincere for our loss.
IHFS recommended a gentleman called James Macmillan to be the celebrant for the service to which a lot of people asked us “did James know my father personally,” as he did such a great job of leading the eulogy.
I am sure my dad would have enjoyed hearing all the wonderful things he had said about him and how brilliantly James explained his story.
My family and I cannot thank IHFS enough for helping us through this hard time.
Their support before and after the funeral was fantastic. Accommodating all of our needs and requests.
I cannot recommend them enough.
Thank you to everyone at IHFS
